Chants

The Making of the soulsongs CD

When I asked Barry Brown to add guitar to my spontaneous chants he said "sure, just send me the timings and keys etc."  Now he should have known that was not going to happen from our last recording studio adventure.  I like to show up and dive into the sound moment.

So, in retrospect, Barry represented the linear needing to know and Anne, who was open to create percussion in the moment held the feminine space of diving into the mystery.  They both held the space of my "Bhakti skat" with such grace.  Barry was a little more tentative and eventually let the sound flow out of his sweet guitar fingers.  Truly a master of the strings and a good sport to dive in not knowing where he was going. We spent the whole day recording with the gentle presence of engineer extraordinaire Charlie Esposito.

The second recording session happened almost a year later.  In the editing process Charlie and I realized that there were a few more chants that were needed to fill out the offerings.  Anne and I had been playing with toning in the studio and decided to call in the Whales and record sing your soul song with nature elements.  I had listened to the whales that Andrew Stevenson had recorded and fell in love with their song.  My morning meditation time was filled with the sound of spring birds in the early morning hours so they also became part of the song.

Everytime we tried to record again there was something that didn't allow for it to happen.  Then one day it all came together and Anne, Charlie and I came together with the recording of the whales to create our soulsong.  Charlie gave Anne and I each headphones that played the continuous chant of the whales and we sang along with them.  We were unable to hear each other toning and singing.  Then we mixed everything together and were delighted with the song that emerged.

Later that day it was reported in the news that a large group of Right Whales were hanging out around the island.  We just smiled, knowing in our hearts that they had come to listen and energetically support the healing chant of love.

I first began making sounds while playing in the woods as a little girl.  They were my personal songs that I created while communing in nature.  Then I became fascinated with the Latin Liturgy that was chanted by the priest at Sunday mass, along with the frankincense that wafted through the cathedral.  My roots for chanting mantra come directly from these two experiences.  When attending Satsangas at Kripalu years ago the roots were rekindled and my heart sprouted wings as the vibration of mantra filled my body.

This chanting page was a sketchbook for my CD.  I took great liberties with pronunciation of the Sanskrit when chanting.  I call it my Bhakti Scat.  My intention is to activate the creative life-force (shakti) where by promoting harmony within.

I encourage you to listen to these clips and then treat yourself to either the digital copy or purchase the CD and I will ship you out a copy.

Listen to the CD in its entirety and feel the vibrations of the entire suite of songs.  If you can give your full attention to the experience and lie down in a relaxation position your energetic body will be transformed.
